Science

At Sunny Bank we believe that science will lead to a better understanding of ourselves and the world we live in enabling children to think critically and use existing knowledge and skills to further problem solve. It provides opportunities to appreciate scientific facts and concepts and to experience scientific discovery and utilizes skills and knowledge from other curricular areas. Science is about developing children’s ideas and ways of working that enable us to make sense of the world in which they live through investigation, as well as using and applying process skills. In addition, this promotes moral development by showing children that different opinions should be respected and valued.

  • Lessons allow children time and freedom to explore, investigate and challenge their own views and interests.

  • We want our children to ask questions about the world around them.

  • Mistakes are opportunities for new learning and to investigate a different way of thinking.

  • Our curriculum offers practical ‘hands-on’ experiences with strong links to outdoor learning including Forest Schools.

  • Investigations and experiments are recoded using a range of photos, drawings, tables and written tasks.

  • We ensure children are taught about famous scientists and their discoveries!

  • Each class has a ‘Science Floorbook’ that showcases the children's scientific understanding, knowledge and skills.

  • Science Week, gives children the opportunity to immerserse themselves in the world of science. Children have the chance to enter our amazing Science Fair where they become scientist!
